Fairtrade Fortnight 2010 The Big Swap

Fairtrade Fortnight 2010 The Big Swap

Swap your usual stuff for Fairtrade stuff

For this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight we’re asking the nation to join us in The Big Swap. For two whole weeks we’ll be asking you to swap your usual stuff for Fairtrade stuff. Your usual bananas for Fairtrade bananas, your usual cotton socks for Fairtrade cotton socks, and your usual cuppa for a Fairtrade cuppa. Whenever you pop to the shops, you can use your wallet to make a stand.

This then is the home of all things swap, a hub for all your swapping needs. It tells you how to get involved, what you can swap and most importantly, how to register them. Because we need lots of swaps made. One million and one in fact. Every swap will be proof that the people of the UK want producers in the developing world to get a fairer deal

What you can Swap

The Fairtrade range started small. Like one bar of chocolate small. Now there are over 4,500 products bearing the FAIRTRADE Mark. A glorious array of products that spans pineapples and footballs to duvets and rice.

For more information, see here:

Let us know what you are swapping!

Beauty products now including fair trade ingredients
Beauty products now including fair trade ingredients

Beauty products containing Fair Trade ingredients such as cocoa butter, sugar and Brazil nut oil were launched in June 2009 to give poor farmers in the third world countries the chance to sell their crops at a better price.

The initiative sees Boots, Lush, Bubble and Balm, Essential Care and Neal’s Yard stock no less than 57 products.

Fantastic news!

Peaches gets ethical

Peaches Geldof

Peaches Geldof

Although Peaches Geldolf is often reported in the media as being a little wayward and out of control,  she doesn’t just fritter away her time in nightclubs being photographed in various guises cumulating in bad press!

Im really proud of her since she has been working alongside the the fair trade jewellery manufacturers,  ‘MADE’ Made, to design and produce a fabulous new range of ethically produced fair trade jewellery which is really trendy and funky.

Here is the link to MADE for further information

Peaches Geldof says:

“I like Made because it’s ethical yet this doesn’t compromise the fashionable status of their collections…the handmade attention to detail adds something special to each piece created.”

This bold, bright and stylish range was inspired by warm summer days and daisy chains. It’s the perfect way to jazz up your summer wardrobe as the days (slowly!) start to get a little warmer.

Fair Trade aims for £2 billion sales by 2012

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

The Fairtrade Foundation has appointed a new Marketing Director to its senior leadership team to help deliver an ambitious new strategy to double its reach and impact for producers in the developing world.

The new position is created as the Fairtrade Foundation seeks to deepen its relationship with existing supporters and to mainstream Fairtrade purchasing habits as part of UK consumer lifestyles, lifting sales of products carrying the FAIRTRADE mark to £2bn by 2012.

Fairtrade in the UK has gone from strength to strength, where estimated retail sales of Fairtrade products reached £700m in 2008, a 43% increase on 2007 despite the global economic downturn.

One of the unique aspects to marketing Fairtrade is that alongside conventional promotion activities, its predominant strength comes from its loyal, dependable and global supporter base.

According to a survey by GlobeScan, 26% of people learn about Fairtrade through family, friends and colleagues – a key ripple effect for Fairtrade which the Foundation hopes to fuel with its new marketing plans.

How Fair is Fair Trade

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

The Fairtrade label is becoming increasingly common. But while shoppers seem keen to pay a little over the odds for fair trade products, some observers question how effective it really is in helping developing world farmers.

There is no doubt that the modern day consumer has a greater awareness of the whole Fair Trade ethos.

That is, some may understand the full implications of purchasing a Fair Trade product and with this in mind will consciously buy Fair Trade because they want to support the cause.

Others may just ‘know’ its good to buy such labels without any concept of the implications.

Regardless of levels of awareness, there is no denying that the  overwhelming availability of Fair Trade in contemporary society could be viewed as a money spinning retail market tapping into the conscience of more affluent westerners by using the Fair Trade label as bait to profiteer.

Fair Trade products are available either through large supermarket chains (bananas, tea, coffee, herbs, spices), or retail chains selling furniture or clothing (tee shirts, cotton shirts, childrens clothes).

There are approx 2,500 product lines in the UK that carry the Fair Trade mark. Last year we spent £290m on fair trade food, furniture and clothing - showing an mindblowing increase of 46% on the previous year.

While I understand there is one camp who take the view that by focusing on poor third world farmers achieving a ’fair price’, the movement is not addressing longer term developmental issues  such as mechanisation and industrialisation I cannot help feeling this is short sighted.

In my view, the more the western market is flooded, and the more Fair Trade sold, then over time, the third world will surely reap the benefits in the end?

Surely, the more we buy, the more they produce, the more they sell, and then the more we buy, the more they earn and so on…..and this can only be a positive cyclic relationship perpetuating greater wealth over time for impoverished societies?

Fair trade fortnight - sweet news!

Cocoa Production

Cocoa Production

Britain’s most popular chocolate bar, Dairy Milk, is to become Fairtrade certified in Britain and Ireland in a move that will double the amount of cocoa bought from smallholders in the developing world under the sustainable farming scheme.

The decision - the highlight of Fairtrade Fortnight - will transform Fairtrade chocolate from a niche preference to a mainstream ethical benchmark, bearing the sustainability kitemark on 15% of chocolate sold in Britain. Cadbury’s chief executive, Todd Stitzer, said he plans to convert the group’s other chocolate brands to Fairtrade “as soon as we can do it”.  Dairy Milk is the first mainstream chocolate bar to be sold with a commitment to pay cocoa suppliers the “Fairtrade premium” of $150 (£105) a tonne above market prices. When the bars go on sale this summer the value of Fairtrade chocolate sales in Britain will leap from £45m to £225m. Cadbury’s pledge to buy 10,000 tonnes of cocoa under Fairtrade terms will triple certified sales from Ghana.

This is truly fantastic news………….
