THE D.E.C. HAITI EARTHQUAKE APPEAL HAS CLOSED

August 20th, 2010

6  MONTHS ON………….

D.E.C.  ( http://www.dec.org.uk/)  would like to thank the UK public for helping raise an extraordinary £101 million. See the series of videos on YouTube showing how the money is helping people rebuild their lives.

A devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on January 12th 2010. It was the worst earthquake to hit the country in 200 years. Up to three million people live in the area worst hit by the quake, which centred 10 miles south-west of the densely populated capital Port-Au-Prince. The latest estimates are 230,000 people killed, 300,000 injured and 1.2 million left needing emergency shelter. Survivors lost family, homes, livelihoods and essential services. Hospitals, schools and government buildings were all destroyed.

The survivors’ urgent needs for medical care, food and water are increasingly being met, but the challenges remain huge. There is a critical need for appropriate emergency shelter and also latrines to prevent the spread of diseases. Homes, schools, health clinics and essential services such as water and sewerage must all be replaced or provided. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, greatly increasing the risk that people will suffer or die in the aftermath of a natural disaster.

D.E.C. APPEALS FOR DONATIONS FOR LATEST FLOOD DISASTER IN PAKISTAN

August 20th, 2010

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) (http://www.dec.org.uk/) are currently appealing for donations to help with humanitarian aid for the victims of the recent tragedy of the Pakistan floods. Please see below for further information on how to make your donation.

Over 1,000 people are reported to have died with that number likely to rise as more information becomes available. About 2.5 million people are believed to have been affected by the floods which may worsen as further rain falls and water moves downstream. In the aftermath of the floods there is a serious risk to survivors from potentially deadly diseases which will spread as a result of contaminated surface and drinking water.

The Disaster Emergency Committee has opened the ‘DEC Pakistan Floods Appeal’ and special broadcasts will run from Thursday (05.08.10) on the BBC, ITV, Sky, Channel 4, Channel Five and independent radio stations.

The money raised will help fund the life saving work in Pakistan of the DEC’s Members and their partners.

The money raised will support the efforts in Pakistan of the DEC’s members which are the leading UK aid agencies.

Donate now online or call 0370 60 60 900 to speak to the official DEC Donation line

Ways to Donate to the DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal

February 23rd, 2010

Indigo Ocean wholly support the work of the DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) in helping to bring aid at times of overseas emergency.

The DEC is an organisation that brings together a unique alliance of the UK’s aid, corporate, public and broadcasting sectors to rally the nation’s compassion, and ensure that funds raised go to DEC agencies best placed to deliver effective and timely relief to people most in need.

The DEC’s remit is to unite agency efforts in times of disaster - such as flood, earthquake or famine - wherever it happens in the world. The way we at DEC approach our work is to maximise funds raised and ensure they are spent in an effective and fully accountable way.

DEC Members

The DEC is made up of 13 aid agencies, http://www.dec.org.uk/who_we_are/dec_members.html  who are UK registered humanitarian charities that fulfil certain criteria. See http://www.dec.org.uk/item/61. The DEC members have the expertise in the delivery and provision of aid. Members’ performance and any new applicants are reviewed every two years.

Rapid Response Network

The DEC is also supported by a network of television and radio broadcasters, the banks, the Post Office, BT, regional and national press and a range of organisations in the corporate sector. These organisations help the DEC at the time of an appeal, to publicise the situation and raise funds.

Fairtrade Fornight 2010

February 18th, 2010

Fairtrade Fortnight 2010 The Big Swap

Fairtrade Fortnight 2010 The Big Swap

Swap your usual stuff for Fairtrade stuff

For this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight we’re asking the nation to join us in The Big Swap. For two whole weeks we’ll be asking you to swap your usual stuff for Fairtrade stuff. Your usual bananas for Fairtrade bananas, your usual cotton socks for Fairtrade cotton socks, and your usual cuppa for a Fairtrade cuppa. Whenever you pop to the shops, you can use your wallet to make a stand.

This then is the home of all things swap, a hub for all your swapping needs. It tells you how to get involved, what you can swap and most importantly, how to register them. Because we need lots of swaps made. One million and one in fact. Every swap will be proof that the people of the UK want producers in the developing world to get a fairer deal

What you can Swap

The Fairtrade range started small. Like one bar of chocolate small. Now there are over 4,500 products bearing the FAIRTRADE Mark. A glorious array of products that spans pineapples and footballs to duvets and rice.

For more information, see here:

http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/

Let us know what you are swapping!
